Save the Hair

Male pattern hair loss (MPHL) is the most common form of hair loss, representing close to 95% of all cases in men. In fact, about half of all men experience MPHL by the age of 50.It can begin with a receding hairline, slow balding at the crown, or both. These changes are typically gradual and begin with men in their 20s. If left untreated, MPHL is a condition that usually gets worse.

It’s Genetic

MPHL is indeed genetic. While other factors may make a small contribution to hair loss, heredity is the primary cause. Contrary to popular belief, baldness is not inherited solely from a person’s maternal family. Either side of the family can be affected with a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which causes hair follicles to shrink and eventually die, causing hair loss.

What Can You Do?

Like for almost everything we do or everything we are, there are options. The first option, and the most successful, is hair restoration. However, this requires surgery. Even though this is an outpatient surgery, there are a large number of men who, for various reasons, will not choose this option.

The second option is Propecia, an oral mediation in tablet form requiring a doctor’s prescription. Propecia was developed to treat mild to moderate male pattern hair loss and was developed to be used only by men. In the first year of treatment, Propecia increases the number of scalp hairs for most men, helping to fill in thin or balding areas of the scalp and slow hair loss.

Option three is topical and consists of shampoos and lotions such as Rogaine, Minoxidil, and Nioxin. All of these are over-thecounter products and can be found at retail stores and hair salons. These products claim to restore hair growth; however, in our experience, we have found these products are best used to maintain current hair status rather than act in restoration.

When it comes to hair loss, you owe it to yourself to consider all options. So consult with your doctor about what is right for you.
